Provide an atmosphere of safety and comfort for children who have been displaced from their homes through no fault of their own.
Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house,
The family was drinking, cursing and shouting out loud.
Dirty clothes and socks were scattered about,
That hadn’t been washed and therefore worn out.
The children were hungry and shivering in bed
While visions of fear raced in their heads.
And momma stoned on meth and Dad higher than a kite,
Had just begun a long nights fight.
And then, with a crash, I heard at the door
Someone came stumbling across the floor.
As I drew the covers over my head
The sounds let me know another night of dread.
Not the usual beloved children’s story, but for some children this is their life. Hunger, neglect, fear and abuse should never be concerns for any child, but some face these conditions everyday. We all care about the issue of child neglect and abuse. But, we hear a lot more about the problem than about the solutions.
A group of concerned community citizens met and discussed the issues of the number of available placements in the local area for children who had come into DCFS care. As a direct result of this meeting a volunteer board was formed. In 2009 The Children Shelter received its incorporation and nonprofit status. At this time a fundraising committee were formed and volunteers tool an active part to raise money for The Children’s Shelter.
A pre-owned building was purchased to house The Children’s Shelter. Community volunteers made renovations to the building making it suitable for housing children.
An administrator was hired to oversee meeting standards set forth by the Minimum Licensing Standards for Child Welfare agencies by the State of Arkansas. The Children’s Shelter opened its doors June 1, 2009. The Children’s Shelter is a private non-profit emergency shelter. By state law children may stay up to 90 days. The Children’s Shelter is designed to meet the needs of children in care.
